The wire in your bra was never what lifted you.
23+ years of garment design revealed the 5 things that do.
For 28 years I wore underwire, because that's what everyone tells you: "if you want lift, you need the wire."
I did try the soft ones, but they made me look flat and rolled up before lunch, so they all ended up at the back of my drawer.
Then I flew home from a work trip, 16 hours with layovers, and somewhere over Singapore, I gave up and went to the plane toilet just to unhook it for ten minutes.
When I finally got home, I took my bra off before my coat.
My husband Earl has been designing clothes for over 23 years (he trained at Central Saint Martins), and funnily enough I'd never once asked him about bras.
That night I finally asked: "how does a thin piece of metal actually lift you?"
He didn't have an answer either. Finding one took us 13 months and 43 samples, and here's what we learned.
What we found turned everything I'd been told about bras upside down.
Here are the 5 things we changed: why your bra has been hurting you all along, and why a wire was never the only way to get lift.
1The wire was never what lifted you
Why does a wired bra lift you? Not because of the metal itself. The wire creates a firm shelf under each breast, so the weight rests on something solid instead of pulling down on your straps.
The problem: a wire is thin and hard. It pushes on one small spot under your breast all day. That's why it starts to hurt after a few hours.
Straps dig in
Wire ends poke
Wire presses
Band leaves marks
Here's what's happening
Sit or lean forward, and the wire presses harder into the same spot.
The wire ends press into your underarms every time you reach.
A tight band holds the wire in place, and leaves red lines by night.
After a few washes, wires bend or poke through.
So we set out to keep the lift, but take away everything that hurts.
Our first question was simple: if the wire gives you lift, why can't a wireless bra?
Here's what we discovered after tearing apart over 30 wireless bras: most of them don't lift because they took the wire out and never really replaced it.
Why? A bra made of soft stretch fabric is cheaper and easier to make, and "soft" sells.
So instead, most of them rely on a thin jelly strip and stretchy fabric to hold you in. But a thin jelly strip is too narrow and soft to carry any weight, so it just bends.
So instead of lifting you, they just flatten you, with all the weight hanging from your straps.
That's why so many women say the same things about their wireless bras:
- "It does not really give any lift, so the boobs look kind of squashed overall."
- "It fits, but it does not give you any back or side lift."
- "No support under breasts."
No wire also meant no shelf.
So we did the opposite: a wide 3D gel support panel. Hundreds of tiny gel drops bonded into soft, seamless fabric, all sharing the weight.
Together, they do the wire's job. And because it's gel, not metal, it moves when you move.
It follows the same U-shape under each breast, so you get the same "shelf" that holds you up from below. Wide enough to carry the weight, flexible enough that it never digs in.
Think of carrying a heavy shopping bag.
Hold it by a thin string and it cuts into your fingers. Hold it by a wide handle and it's the same weight, but it doesn't hurt. Our wide panel works the same way.
And between the cups, the frame comes up higher, like a little wall, so each breast stays in its own cup instead of squashing together.
2The other hidden piece that gives a bra its lift
We wanted to understand why wireless bras never lift, even beyond the missing wire.
Testing them side by side, we kept seeing the same thing: with nothing holding the sides, your breasts drift out toward your armpits.
You lose your shape, and from the front you look flat.
A wired bra stops this because the wire wraps around the side of each breast.
So we made it better in 2 ways:
- Remember the wide gel shelf that replaces the wire? It doesn't stop under your bust. It curves up the sides of each cup too, so it holds you in at the sides, not just from below.
- New: a second gel layer in the side panels. It gently gathers tissue back toward the centre of each cup, so nothing spreads out toward your arms.
The result: everything stays in front, where it belongs. That's where your lift and shape come from.
"Bästa behå jag någonsin haft. Helt underbar, känner inte att jag har den på mig. Lyfter bra och är stabil. Köpt många 😀"
(The best bra I've ever had. Wonderful, I don't feel like I'm wearing it. Lifts well and feels stable. Bought lots.)
3The secret lift no one ever notices is hiding in the shape of the cup
This one we found by accident. We were trying out cup samples, and I wore a different pair each day.
One day I came home and said to Earl, "These ones are so comfortable. And I look... lifted? Why?"
He cut the cup open on his table. The padding was thicker at the bottom than at the top.
That's when it clicked: the wire was never working alone. The shape of the cup was doing half the work, giving each breast its form and pushing it up.
Most wireless bras skip the cups. They're soft and nothing else, so your breasts get pressed flat against your chest.
So we built the cups back in. Believe it or not, this took the longest to get right. The shape has to lift you without squashing you, and that's harder than it sounds.
The result is teardrop-shaped cups. They have more fill at the bottom than the top. That pushes each breast up and forward, just like a good wired bra. Under a T-shirt, you look rounded and lifted.
We also gave each breast its own separate padded cup, so they stay in place.
The padding doesn't fold or move around during the day, and it keeps its shape after washing.
Want a lighter feel on a hot day? Take them out. Your bra, your choice. And when you put them back, they lock into the cups, so they won't twist or bunch up, even in the washing machine.
4Straps that lift you from above without digging in
Who would've thought lifting two breasts could involve so many connected parts?
Every time we solved one problem, we found another.
Here's the frustrating part. Lift doesn't only come from below. Your straps hold you up from above too. But almost every strap we tested was either too thin or too thick.
Wired bras use thin straps that dig into your shoulders as the day goes on.
Most wireless bras go the other way: wide, thick straps that hold you, but look so sporty you feel like you're off to the gym.
There's almost nothing in between. And when straps slip, your lift is gone by lunch.
The True Support Bra's straps are wider than a regular bra strap, but slim enough to stay feminine under a vest top.
Width alone doesn't fix it, though, because every body is different. So the straps also:
- Adjust, so you set exactly how much lift you want.
- Cross at the back, which pulls the straps toward the middle so they stop slipping off your shoulders and gives you a little extra lift.
5And you keep everything you wanted from a soft wireless bra
Okay, we cheated a little.
Reason 5 is really five reasons in one. Because while we were adding all that lift, we refused to give up a single thing you love about going wireless:
- No wire digging into your ribs or poking out after a few washes.
- No hooks at the back. It pulls on over your head, so there's no clasp to press into your spine when you lean back in your chair.
- Buttery-soft stretch fabric that moves with you when you sit, bend and reach.
- Seamless edges, so no lines under a fitted top.
- Ventilated pads with 300+ tiny air holes, so you stay cooler than in a foam cup.
The kind of bra you forget you're wearing, until someone asks where you got it.
"The True Support Bra is the absolute best and most comfy bra I've ever had! After trying one, I immediately ordered three more!"
Picture tomorrow. You pull it on over your head in one move and get dressed. At your desk, nothing digs.
You reach for the top shelf, carry the shopping in, sit through the long meeting, and never once fix a strap.
That evening you take it off, and there are no red lines.
Just the feeling of being lifted all day, without paying for it with your ribs.
Who it's for, and finding your size
Is it right for me? We designed the True Support Bra to lift like a wired bra, without the wire.
It works best for small, medium and larger busts, up to 110 cm around the fullest part.
If you have a very full bust, we'll be honest with you: we're still working on a version for you. 🙈
If you really want one, email me directly at ellen@softessentials.se. I'll show my husband every message and tell him it's urgent, so he speeds things up!
Ellen
Everyone else, check your size below.
Finding your size takes one minute. We know what you're thinking: "Only two sizes? That can't fit me."
That's exactly why we sourced the best fabric we could find: a premium 4-way stretch that moves across, up and down to mould to your shape, then springs back so it never sags or loses its form.
It fits your body, so there's no band-and-cup guessing. Measure two numbers in cm and pick One Size or Plus Size:
| Size | Under the bust | Fullest part of the bust |
|---|---|---|
| One Size | 66–80 cm | 73–93 cm |
| Plus Size | 80–95 cm | 88–110 cm |
Between sizes? Size up. Wrong size? Swap it, or send it back under our 90-day guarantee.
We could have made it cheaper. But that wouldn't be fair to you.
Because of all the cheap, drop-shipped "miracle bras" out there, we made one promise from day one: no shortcuts.
A cheaper version would have meant thinner fabric that goes floppy after a few washes, pads that fold up in the machine, and a band that rolls up by lunch. In other words, exactly the bras you've already given up on.
So we took a risk and did what most bra brands won't: we kept every expensive part.
- A wide gel panel instead of a cheap wire. A second gel layer in the sides.
- Teardrop cups with 300+ tiny air holes for breathability.
- Premium sweat-wicking 4-way stretch fabric that holds up wash after wash.
There was just one problem: it all adds up. 13 months of getting it right. Premium materials and careful stitching that doesn't come apart in the wash. Stock kept here in Sweden, so your bra reaches you in days, not weeks. Plus VAT. That's why it's priced at 699 kr.
But here's what I can promise you:
- You'll get that free feeling of being supported and covered, without being squeezed.
- It keeps lower, heavier breasts lifted and secure, without looking unnaturally shaped.
- You'll love how the removable cups fill out nicely and never shift around.
- You'll buy it as your weekend bra, and end up wearing it every day.
And here's my personal guarantee: if it doesn't do everything I just promised, send it back. Wear it, wash it, live in it for up to 90 days. Even after 3 months of use, you get a full refund. That's how confident we are.
This guarantee only applies to True Support Bras ordered through this link. All other orders have our standard 14-day returns.
